Bedazzling has never really gone away — it just went underground between decades of "less is more." It's the craft of gluing rhinestones onto fabric, and the entire skill ceiling is "can you place a dot of glue where you want it." You will not outgrow it in a weekend, mostly because there's no ceiling to reach.

What it costs

Bare-minimum start: about $12 — a small mixed pack of flat-back rhinestones and a bottle of ordinary craft glue, applied to a plain bandana or an old t-shirt you already own. It won't survive a wash cycle, but it'll survive a night out, which is enough to know if you like it.

Practical setup: about $30. That's a bottle each of E6000 and B-7000 — two different specialty adhesives, because they do different jobs — plus a proper mixed rhinestone assortment in a few sizes. E6000 is stronger and better for something that'll take real wear (a bag, a shoe), while B-7000 dries clearer and more flexible, better for fabric that bends and stretches, like a shirt or a bandana. Buying both up front saves a second order once you realize one glue doesn't fit every project.

Optional later: a wax-tipped rhinestone picker (makes placing tiny stones far less fiddly than tweezers), a heat-set applicator for iron-on stones, and bulk stone packs once you know which sizes and colors you actually reach for.

The one thing worth spending on is the right glue for the fabric — a stone that pops off after two washes because you used the wrong adhesive is the most common reason people give up. Beyond glue and stones, there's nothing ongoing to buy.

What to buy

Two glues: E6000 for anything structural or non-stretchy (bags, shoes, hard surfaces), B-7000 for fabric that flexes (shirts, masks, bandanas). A mixed rhinestone pack in a couple of sizes — bigger stones for statement pieces, smaller for detail work. That's genuinely the whole kit.

Skip the "bedazzler" stapling gun tool sold in craft stores — it punches metal studs through fabric and leaves visible prongs on the back, which looks cheap and can't be undone. Skip buying one giant tub of a single stone size; you'll want variety within your first few projects. You can borrow tweezers from a household first-aid kit before buying a dedicated applicator.

How to start

Start with a plain bandana and a handful of same-size stones. You don't need a design plan or specialty tools yet.

Lay your stones loosely on the fabric first to plan spacing before any glue touches anything — bedazzling mistakes are permanent the moment glue sets, and rearranging dry stones costs you nothing. Apply a small dot of glue to the fabric, not the stone, then press the stone down and hold for a few seconds. Work in small sections rather than gluing the whole piece at once, since wet glue stays workable for only a minute or two. Let it cure fully — usually 24 hours — before wearing or washing it. The most common beginner mistake is using too much glue, which seeps out around the stone's edges and dries visibly; a little goes further than it looks like it will. Work in a ventilated room, since both glues have a strong solvent smell.

Is it for you?

Bedazzling rewards patience with something genuinely satisfying to look at, and it's forgiving of shaky hands since a crooked stone is still just a stone. It suits people who like a project they can finish in one sitting and wear that same night. If you want subtlety, this isn't your hobby — the whole point is that it catches light from across the room. If you're comfortable with a little maximalism and don't mind smelling like glue for an hour, it's an easy, cheap way to make something plain feel like yours.
