Golf

Four hours to hit a ball 300 times, and somehow one good shot makes the whole day worth it.

Golf has a reputation as an old person's slow walk, and then you actually try to hit the ball straight and discover it's one of the more technically demanding sports to pick up as an adult — a tiny swing flaw sends the ball nowhere near where you intended. It's also one of the most social sports here, played in relaxed rounds of conversation as much as competition.

What it costs

Bare-minimum start: about $40 — a driving range session with rental clubs, hitting balls to learn the basic swing before deciding whether to invest further.

Practical setup: about $350. That's a beginner club set (irons, a driver, a putter, and a bag — often sold as a discounted starter bundle rather than piece by piece), a dozen golf balls, and a round or two at a public course with cart and green fees included.

Optional later: individual club upgrades once you know your swing and preferences, golf lessons with a pro (genuinely one of the highest-value investments for actually improving), and a membership at a course if you're playing regularly enough to justify it over per-round fees.

The one thing worth spending on, more than clubs, is a few lessons early on — bad swing habits formed in the first weeks are hard to unlearn later, and a pro can catch fundamental issues in one session that take months to self-diagnose.

What to buy

A beginner club set bundle, which is genuinely a better value than buying individual clubs piecemeal while you're still learning your swing and preferences. A dozen golf balls — you will lose several in your first few rounds, so budget-friendly balls are the right call early on. A golf glove for grip consistency.

Skip premium individual clubs before you've taken lessons and played several rounds with a beginner set; you won't know what you actually need until you understand your own swing tendencies. Skip a course membership before you've played enough public rounds to know how often you'll realistically go.

How to start

Start at a driving range with rental clubs, focusing purely on making consistent contact before worrying about distance or accuracy. You don't need your own clubs or a course round yet — range time is cheaper and far less pressured for pure swing practice.

Take at least a few lessons early — a golf pro can identify grip, stance, and swing plane issues in one session that are much harder to fix once they've become habit through unguided practice. Practice short, controlled swings before full-power ones; contact consistency matters more than distance at the beginner stage, and most beginners chase power before they've built consistency. Expect your first actual round on a course to be humbling — golf's beginner learning curve is real, and a good score isn't the point of an early round; just finishing and understanding pace of play is. The most common beginner mistake is gripping the club too tightly and swinging too hard, both of which reduce control; a relaxed grip and a smoother, unhurried swing consistently outperform a tense, forceful one.

Is it for you?

Golf suits people who enjoy a slow-paced, social sport with real technical depth to chase over years, not weeks. It rewards patience and deliberate practice far more than athleticism — plenty of unathletic people play excellent golf. If you want fast results or a quick workout, golf's pace and learning curve work against both. If you like the idea of a hobby that doubles as a several-hour social outing with friends or colleagues, few sports combine leisure and challenge quite the way golf does.
